On a trip to San Luis Obispo one time, we stayed at a horse ranch.  There were horses all around - in the corral right up to our back windows, in the wide pastures out front, down in the training ring.   Sprinklers mounted on four-foot pipes would start up at dawn and toss water in wide arcs...it was summer, and HOT.  The horses didn't seem to mind (too much).  I was reading about cave paintings in Lascaux and Altamira at that time so maybe it's no surprise that the images on those ancient walls seem to have influenced my rendition of the summer horses of San Luis Obispo.
